![]() Zebra mussels have been confirmed in 255 inland lakes and 17 rivers and streams throughout Michigan thanks to the Michigan Sea Grant, a cooperative project between Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. All of the water in your boat, engine, and equipment, including the bilge water, should be drained. Remove all animal, plant, or mud from the area. If your boat, trailer, or other recreational equipment has been in the water for an extended period of time, you should inspect it to see if it has been contaminated with zebra mussels. The zebra mussels clogging intake structures in power plants and water treatment plants damages power generation and water treatment plants in Canada every year. They compete with native species for food and will attach themselves to native mussels, suffocating them in the process. The density of zebra mussels on watercraft surfaces can reach 70,000 individuals per m2. Canadians are encouraged to check to see if their province has adopted or recommended Clean, Drain, and Dry methods. Zebra Mussels have been known to have invaded Manitoba, the westernmost province in Canada. There have been reports of zebra and/or quagga mussels found in Canadian stores that sell moss ball products. They also pose a threat to the infrastructure of the reservoir, such as water intake pipes. These invasive mussels can have a detrimental impact on the lake’s native fish population. The presence of zebra mussels in Possum Kingdom Lake has caused concern among biologists and anglers alike. Zebra mussels were first discovered in the lake in 2009 and have since spread throughout its waters. Possum Kingdom Lake is home to a variety of fish species, including largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. It was constructed in 1941 for the purpose of supplying water to the cities of Fort Worth and Waco. Possum Kingdom Lake is a man-made reservoir located in north-central Texas. They also have a tendency to clog water intake pipes and other infrastructure. Zebra mussels are a concern because they are prolific breeders and can quickly out-compete native species for food and habitat. They were first discovered in the Great Lakes in the 1980s and have since spread to inland lakes and waterways across North America. They were first spotted stateside in Michigan in 1988 and have since spread to 29 states and more than 600 lakes and reservoirs.Zebra mussels are a freshwater invasive species that originally hails from the Black and Caspian Seas. Kennedy said the invasive species originated in the Balkans and was brought to the Americas more than 20 years ago, likely attached to a ship in the Great Lakes. The department launched a public education campaign last year to encourage lake users to clean, drain and dry their boats, trailers and gear. Officials with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department say the species can be spread from lake to lake by boaters who don't properly clean their watercraft between lakes. "It gives us a better idea of how quickly they're going downstream."įor now, UNT will continue to monitor the waterway to track where the mussels move. We put them into a database and we photograph them," grad student Colleen VonEhr Evans said. "We're basically at this point just cataloging them. ![]() "It is a very severe situation,” Hambrick said. They also harming boats and motors left in infested waters, and the sharp edges of their shells can injure swimmers and other animals in the water. "They have to be mechanically removed because these mussel shells attach themselves very tightly to the pipes," he said. They could potentially have a huge effect on the cost of fresh water, Kennedy said. The mussels clog water intake pipes, making it difficult to move water to reservoirs. The bigger problem with their presence in the Trinity River is that it’s such a major source of water for the area.
